The team that theyre trying to catch lost their MVP, but have found a way to excel with adversity staring right at them. That is a Pirates team who have been playing awful baseball in September. The Cubs have appeared to throw in the towel on the season. Theyve slipped to 5 games back of the final wildcard and into a tie with the Mets. Their heads have been out of it, but they met their match last night.

Look for them to take care of business in games 2 and 3. Well, if the Cubs lose they will, but they won't win this one. ***CINCINNATI -110*** Yes, the Brewers magic number is 3, but they won't eat into it here. Gray has had a phenomenal season for the Reds with a record of 11-7 and an ERA of 2.80. He just doesn't give up many runs. The Brewers only need to win 1 or 2 more and they have much better pitching match up coming later in the week.

Edit Comment

With the addition of Trevor Bauer at the deadline and with the rest of the big-league starters pitching well, the plan will be for Mahle to work as a multi-inning reliever down the stretch. He tested his hamstring by running the bases Saturday and had a live batting practice session Sunday, throwing 20 pitches. He will throw a bullpen session at Triple-A Louisville on Tuesday and a rehab assignment will follow.

Mahle will enter the rotation as a temporary sixth starter as a result of the Reds and Cardinals playing their second doubleheader in as many days. The right-hander has missed most of the second half with a hamstring injury but returned to action for three minor-league starts in August, building up to five innings in his final outing with Louisville.

He has a 4.43 ERA as the road starter with either team.Last outing:Lyles gave up just one solo homer over 4 2/3 innings while striking out nine with three walks against the San Diego Padres. He owns an overall ERA of 3.94 in the second half including his few remaining starts from what was a disastrous tenure with the Pittsburgh Pirates. Lyles enters Wednesday with a 2.35 ERA through 10 starts with the Brewers. The team has gone 9-1 over those 10 starts.

Dog of the day

Everything fell apart with one out in the fifth, though, as he was pulled after allowing two singles, a homer and a double. Mahle pitched well through four innings, allowing just one run on a Nick Ahmed solo shot. In four starts in the second half on either side of a hamstring injury, Mahle has now given up 21 runs (16 earned) in 20.1 innings.

Lyles spent a bit of time in Milwaukee as a reliever last season. It was some of the best work in his career, as he posted an ERA of 3.31 in 11 appearences out of the bullpen. He was on a losing team and struggling to find confidence. As soon as he went to a different destination, though, things began to go south again. Jordan Lyles was doing absolutely nothing on the Pirates. The Brewers threw him a raft to stay afloat and hes been looking great and has his head way above water.
