As yet another Wexford festival opera season draws ever closer the fringe events associated with the festival would not be complete without the Ballycogley players. This is the largest annual fringe festival in the south east and it celebrates its 60th birthday this year and the Ballycogley players are proud and honoured to have contributed to these events for many years past.

The intermediate team currently sit in third place trailing table toppers Naomh Eanna by four points after three of the five games to be played. This defeat gives the men in green a mountain to climb to reach the knockout stages of this years championship and the fact that so many of the junior team played makes fielding a team in this grade next to impossible.

However Glynn Barntown are a team who I think could easily win a senior championship, however once again it will depend on what players play and don't play. St Martins to win Horeswood v Glynn- Great to see Horeswood back at the top table in senior football once again after a year in intermediate, very lucky to get back up in some ways but showed real character to do so. Ferns v Taghmon - Interesting game if Ferns have all their county hurlers on the field they will probably be well capable of winning this. No Jason Ryan in Taghmon's corner anymore so that makes them more vunerable. Bunclody by 5-7 points Duffry Rovers v St Fintans - Hard game to call here but think St Fintans should come through. Fethard always tough to beat and have a scoring forward in John Tubritt but Shelmaliers should have enough in the tank. Crossabeg probably should won this grade last year. Starlights have lost their coach and his loss gives St Annes the advantage here. A tentative vote for Crossabeg by 2-3 points. St Annes by 2 points Fethard v Shelmaliers - County champions have a history of starting well in the senior football and I don't see any reason why it won stay the same here. Kilanerin v Gusserane- Tough game to call Gusserane's build up to this game has been tame enough on the results side of things however they will have county players back now and with Kilanerin Mattie less hard to see where they will get the missing 5 or 6 points per game. Shelmaliers by 4-6 Intermediate:Ballyhogue v St Mary's Rosslare - Judging on last year not much between these at a guss I'll go for BallyhogueGorey v Bannow Ballymitty - Naomh Eanna will be too fit and strong for Bannow Ballymitty could see a 7-9 point margin here. Somemay see it as a surprise but Ferns to sneak this by 2 points Bunclody v St Joesphs - Bunclody are good enough to win this grade and frankly St Joseph's are not, if Bunclody are to be serious contenders they need to hit the ground running and should win this pulling up. Castletown v St Martins - St Martin's will have too much firepower here one feels, Shane Roche taking his first role into coaching management with a senior club side so will be interesting to see his influence. League results indicate this is the case and St Annes normally a club where all players will tog out for the club regardless of county football or hurling. They have a few scoring forwards in their arsenal so makes them potential winners of any game in Wexford senior football. Is Donal Shanley completely gone off the radar since the Leitrim game t the start of the season? Crossabeg v St Mary's Maudlintown - Interesting Wexford district derby, St Mary's seem much more a club since the move back to Maudlintown and have been making strides forward. Is he injured etc? Senior:St James v Sarsfields - St James to take the victory here won't be a lot in it but the inclusion of intercounty players or not will be crucial in this game. Always a draw likely in round 1 and this could be the draw. Glynn Barntown to win by 2 or 3 points looks a safe bet.Starlights v St Annes- St Annes will win this they have a coach in with bags of experience at this stage and likely doing more football than he would have got the chance to do with St Martins.

In the hurling, it will be really interesting to see how Naomh anna kick on after their historic first senior win last year and having to cope with more of their squad being involved with county teams than ever before. There are now 4 or 5 clubs with genuine aspirations to win the hurling, which is great for the championship, and I will guess that St. Last year's finalists will be put in separate pools and the same for the beaten semi-finalists but after that it's an open draw so should be exciting. The football is wide open as ever so I'm going to guess that Castletown, if they can finally figure out how to score more, might win the title to create a maroon double. Martin's might learn some lessons from last year's final defeat and go one better in 2019. The championship draws will take place on Saturday 2 February in the Talbot Hotel and will be broadcast live on South East Radio (normally around 6pm).
