The Demon Deacons has now a 2-0 win/loss tally in the regular season for the 4th straight year and are aiming for their 3rd successive win in this contest. Their first match was also a winner for Wake Forest against the Utah State Aggies with a score of 38-35 but lost the ATS at -5. While in Winston-Salem, the Demon Deacons won their second game in a row against the Rice University Owls with a score of 41-21 last Friday night.

Before the Wake Forest football team kicks off the season Thursday night, these are our predictions for each game in 2018.

Howell hurled a 22 yard touchdown pass to WR Dyami Brown in the 4th quarter. QB Sam Howell of the Tar Heels bannered the University of Carolina from an 11 point deficit and rose up over the Southern Carolina Gamecocks to win the match. The Gamecocks built a 20-9 lead from the Tar Heels through a QB Jake Bentley pass to TE Kyle Markway for 22 yard touchdown in the third quarter. The first year QB then sped in a 2-point conversion finishing a drive of 98 yards.

But last week against Army, Ellerbe ran for 103 yards, including a 54-yard touchdown, to spark a Rice ground game that averaged 6.0 yards per carry. Ellerbe led the Owls in rushing yards (408), carries (85) and touchdowns (six) in 2017 before a knee injury forced him to miss all but one game last season. In addition, Rice running back Nahshon Ellerbe looks healthy and ready to contribute.

As a team, Wake Forest is averaging 68.9 points per game on 40% shooting from the field, 30.5% from behind the arc and 72.8% from the foul line this season. Jaylen Hoard added 7 points and a team-high 6 rebounds while Olivier Sarr had 5 points to match his 5 rebounds in the losing effort. Chaundee Brown led the Demon Deacons with 20 points on 7 of 12 shooting with 3 threes while Brandon Childress added 11 points with 3 triples of his own along with a team-high 4 assists as the only other Wake Forest player to score in double figures in the losing effort. The Wake Forest Demon Deacons will look to rebound from an 88-66 loss to Florida State in their last outing, giving the Demon Deacons their 7th loss in their last 8 games. Childress leads Wake Forest with an average of 15.1 points and 4.1 assists per game while Hoard leads the Demon Deacons on the glass with 8.3 rebounds per game this season.

The underdog is 9-3 ATS in the last 12 meetings between these two teams. North Carolina is 5-0 ATS in their last 5 road games and 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games overall while the under is 6-1 in their last 7 games following a loss. Wake Forest is 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games overall and 6-22 ATS in their last 28 conference games while the under is 13-3 in their last 16 games following a loss.

The Demon Deacons allow 75.2 points per game to their opponents which ranks them 266th in Division 1. Wake Forest averages 68.7 points per contest this season, which ranks them 280th in the country. In the turnover department they rank 131st with 13.5 per game. They average 37.7 rebounds per game and 10.8 assists per contest, which ranks them 67th and 330th in those offensive categories. Behind the arc they shoot 30% which is good for 334th in D-1. Their average scoring margin is -6.6 and their shooting percentage is 40% as a team, which has them ranked 340th. They also allow a 47% shooting percentage and a 34% average from behind the arc, ranking them 312th and 186th in those defensive categories. Opponents average 33.7 rebounds a game which ranks 114th, and they give up 15.6 assists per contest which puts them in 331st place in the NCAA.

First year WR Kenneth Walker III sped through 96 yards and a touchdown in the first 2 minutes of the 4th frame to hammer the last nail in the coffin for the Deacons. Wake Forest Jamie Newman passed for 312 yards with 3 touchdowns, a couple to WR Scotty Washington for the Demon Deacons to roll over the Rice Owls at Houston last Friday night. Wake Forest scores at an average of 39.5 points and with an average of 546 yards per game. The Deacons allow 28 points and a total yardage of 458.5.

Its going to be a rough fight for the Demon Deacons, but now that Jamie Newman has been named the starting quarterback and the situation is settled, theyll get the offense going right away and force the Aggies to press. As good as Utah State will be as the season goes on, its not going to be as sharp as it needs to be right away.

The public betting is backing Wake Forest today, but I am sticking with UNC at home. Wake is just 1-4 against the spread in its last five road games and 1-3-1 ATS in their last five after a loss. Despite the setback against Wofford, I dont see the Heels taking a step back in the ACC opener at home. UNC is 28-11-2 ATS in their last 41 home games. North Carolina has won four straight meetings with Wake Forest, but the Demon Deacons have covered the spread in the last two meetings.

Wake Forest had a six-game win streak ended by Tennessee last week. The Demon Deacons are now 7-5 overall. They have failed to cover in their last two and are 4-5-1 against the spread on the year. Wake is averaging 78.7 points per game on offense while allowing 72.6 per contest. Keyshawn Woods is leading the team with 16 points per game while Bryant Crawford is adding 15.3 points and 4.7 assists per contest.
