Our Prediction:

Wigan Warriors will win

Wigan Warriors – Salford Red Devils Match Prediction | 20-09-2019 14:45

The Red Devils have won their last two league fixtures, which included an excellent 26-16 home win against Castleford Tigers last time out, with Jackson Hastings at his inspirational best. Salford will be out for revenge against Wigan and know a win could move them into fourth in the table as well as moving them two points clear of the Warriors. Salford are enjoying an excellent season under the guidance of head coach Ian Watson, who this week was named as an assistant coach to Wayne Bennett for the return of the Great Britain Lions tour this autumn.

At some point, you have to expect things to click for Wigan and the return of some key players could provide the spark to do that but going on their recent form, it is difficult to see that happening and even with 2 international quality wingers, if they make the wrong plays and drop the ball like they have for much of the season, they wont see enough action to influence things.

They now host a Salford side that currently occupy the last place in the current top 5 and should be able to overcome the Red Devils to leapfrog them. Wigan have hit form at the right time as they moved to within touching distance of a play-off spot thanks to their third straight win. That could be telling for Wigan as they look to finish in a play-off spot and they can mark their return with a win. The Warriors have improved a lot recently and now have some home games to look forward to after spending the last six weeks on the road.

Salford Red Devils vs Leeds Rhinos

The Warriors have enjoyed a mini resurgence in recent weeks after picking three victories on the spin for just the second time this season. They have already beaten the Red Devils twice this season, both in close encounters, and another win on Friday night will see them leapfrog Salford and could move as high as fourth in the Super League table. They were 38-22 winners last time out against Huddersfield Giants, with club captain Sean OLoughlin rolling back the years after putting in a superb display at the John Smiths Stadium.

Shaun Wane said midweek he was equally impressed with Powell and McIlorum in their victory over Huddersfield so it will be interesting to see which of the pair begins the game and which is used as an impact interchange. Powell returned for the Warriors last weekend after being given a one-game suspension for a tackle on Red Devil Lama Tasi in last months Ladbrokes Challenge Cup semi-final defeat.

Salford by 6. Despite that, it should be a reversal of the result in the same fixture earlier this season. Its hard to look past Salford considering the ease with which they beat Warrington away from home, however Wigan will be reeling from their comprehensive loss to St Helens at home and should provide a stern test for the home side.

Its been a tough season for Shaun Wanes men but they know if they can string together a handful of wins in the coming weeks it could turn out to be another fruitful season for the Warriors. Wigan have had a mixed start to their Super 8s campaign losing to Leeds on the opening weekend but they managed to return to winning ways this past weekend with a 18-4 victory over Huddersfield.

Salford Red Devils vs Wigan Warriors 24/03/19 Preview, Prediction & Team News

The Red Devils attempted to fight back with tries from Kriss Brining, Junior Sau and Michael Dobson but they left themselves with too much to do. The Warriors beat Salford on the opening weekend of the season at the AJ Bell Stadium racing into a 20-0 lead at half-time with tries from Joe Burgess, George Williams, Joel Tomkins and an Oliver Gildart brace.

Salford start the round in 4th place where they are 6 places and 6 points ahead of Wigan who surprisingly start the round joint bottom of Super League. If Wigan can pick up a moral and confidence boosting win in this one, it could be the catalyst to move back towards the play-off battle whilst a loss could see them cemented in the relegation scrap.

Jackson Hastings has been an extremely important part of the Salford outfit over the past two years, providing game-winning plays in both defence and attack. On the other hand, George Williams has being similarly pivotal for Wigan since becoming their mainstay at stand-off. George Williams showed flashes of brilliance against St Helens but couldnt control the game enough to get his side over the line, while Hastings orchestrated a comprehensive victory against high-flying Warrington last time out.

Salford put in a competitive albeit error-strewn display against Castleford last week but fell just short and will now be looking to bounce back against Wigan. The Warriors still have just one win to their name and although they were better against Warrington, they could be set to taste defeat again here. The Red Devils have players to hurt Wigan and their intensity could cause problems for the Warriors who will be desperate to find a win but could come away without the win once again.
